Coco Hewitt
Artist Biography
Coco Hewitt lives and works in London. She earned a BA from Central St Martins and an MFA from The Slade School of Fine Art. She has been shortlisted for the Well Hung Painting Prize and selected for the forthcoming Fair Play Art fair. Hewitt’s painting is rooted in the relationship between memory, place and landscape. Initially her work comes out of a memory of a place visited at a specific moment, a snapshot in time. From this starting point a conversation takes over with the painting. Her intuitive gestural painterly technique frequently moves towards abstraction, capturing traces of time. Places from memory are re-constructed through extensive layering, becoming fragmented in the expressive use of colour built up in a series of layers to create depth, texture and movement. Working on multiple canvases Hewitt’s painting is a physical process, with traces of her movement animating the surfaces of her paintings.
